UK AND INDIA AGREE TO INCREASE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY COOPERATION

The UK and India have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation on a range of Intellectual Property (IP)-related activities on 8th November, 2016.

The MOU is signed to enhance bilateral cooperation on a range of IP related activities including registrations for patents, trademarks and designs.

The agreement gives emphasis on technical exchanges by supporting enforcement authorities and would easy the judicial resolution of IP disputes. It has been agreed to work on outreach activities including business advice on how to value and secure IP. Also, it has been agreed to launch education campaigns to increase awareness and respect for IP for the general public.

It is also an effort by both the nations to raise the importance of Intellectual Property for economic and social development in both regions.

UK-INDIA RESEARCH INVESTMENTS IN SCIENCE WORTH £80 MILLION

UK has launched various programmes in India on 8th November, 2016 for investment in research through the Newton Fund. The investments demonstrate the fund as a major bilateral initiative in India. It brings together the world class excellence of the UK and India to address global challenges through science and technology.

The research investments are launched to support commercially focused research and development partnerships that bring innovative biotechnologies to market for cleaning, processing and using industrial waste streams.

The investments would improve water quality, reduce energy demand. Other investments in research programme would strengthen the global fight against anti-microbial resistance.

UK’s PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATIONS UPDATE, NOVEMBER 2016

In order to improve air quality in UK, the government has worked on to bring new legislation. The Neighbourhood Planning Bill includes a series of amendments whereby secretary of state can direct neighbouring planning authorities to prepare joint plans. The repeal bill is to free EU legislation and would convert EU law into UK law, which could then be amended or discarded as desired domestically.

The bill gives the guidance to local authorities on making byelaws. It gives emphasis on new minimum room sizes and other measures for shared housing. The bill features about the Environment Agency giving updated permitting details for waste and flooding.

The Planning and Environmental Law Committee regularly responds to official consultations on points of law and technical matters including air quality and noise management in Wales as well as in England. The committee also responds to basement developments, the planning system and National Infrastructure Commission for Wales. The committee gives regulations required by the historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016 and guidance.

Status of Legislation:

The Neighbourhood Planning Bill has entered the committee stage on 11th November, 2016. For further stage, it is required to be returned to the whole house for discussion and possible further amendment at report stage . The Wales Bill is also at committee stage, considered first by the House of Lords. Bills must pass through both Commons' and Lords' processes before they can become law.
