On 6th July 2017, The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has welcomed the court ruling in the allocation of fishing rights in the Western Cape.
“The Western Cape High Court has handed down judgment in favour of the [department] in the matter involving Viking Inshore Fishing (Pty) Ltd.
As per the department, the ongoing challenge to the decision made by the DAFF, in particular the Deputy Director General: Fisheries, to include previously disadvantaged new entrants during its 2015/16 Fishing Rights Allocation Process (FRAP) has been brought to an end, as the application to interdict such decision was dismissed with costs.
The interdict, previously preventing existing and new entrants from participating in the sector, has now been lifted.

The KwaZulu-Natal ‘KZN’ Provincial Government on 27th June 2017 has launched a ground-breaking policy programme geared towards improving the participation of small businesses and small scale farmers in the economy.
“Operation Vula” and its subsidiary, known as the Radical Agrarian Socio-Economic Transformation (RASET), were launched by President Jacob Zuma and the KZN provincial government in Ixopo on Tuesday.
Operation Vula seeks to localise the economy by, initially, exploiting the government buying power to buy from SMMEs and Cooperatives.
It targets specific societal groupings, such as women, youth and people with disabilities in the province; aligns and coordinates enterprises regionally and sectorial; and assists targeted enterprises with skilling, funding and markets.
